Onboard the newly refurbished Fred. Olsen Black Watch

clock 24th May 2017 | comment0 Comments

Updated August 2019

Fred. Olsen has been operating for nearly 170 years now with British style and Norwegian heritage. Focusing on a more traditional style of cruising, without the gimmicks or quirks many are becoming familiar with, Fred Olsen’s Black Watch is a friendly and familiar home away from home whilst at sea. Having undergone an extensive refurbishment in November 2016, we were keen to see the newly improved Black Watch. We sent Gavin from our Marketing Team to sunny Southampton to explore this homely ship. Gavin describes his thoughts as he steps onboard with Fred. Olsen for the first time.

Dining

The choice of dining venues onboard Black Watch is exceptionally varied, from the 5 course a la carte menus of Glentanar through to the alfresco dining offer at The Poolside. If you’re a fan of the buffet then head along to Brigadoon where you’ll find Scottish themed décor and a host of international cuisine throughout your cruise. If you want to enjoy the same meals being served in Glentanar but in a more intimate setting then head along to The Orchid Room or for a real treat, why not check out The Black Watch Room. Here you’ll find an extra special a la carte dining experience with dishes such as steak and seafood cooked to order.

If you just fancy a sweet treat, then definitely make your way to the Bookmark Café where you’ll find a sumptuous selection of chocolates calling out your name.

Accommodation

From single rooms all the way through to suites, there is plenty of choice onboard Black Watch. All the rooms come with amenities you would expect from a land based hotel room including TV, hairdryer, air conditioning and tea and coffee making facilities. All the rooms feature en-suite with shower and there’s plenty of room for you to get ready for that special occasion. If you prefer a view though, it’s worth booking a balcony, with the option of either a private balcony or a terrace balcony which is perfect for a spot of people watching.

However for that little bit of luxury, how about a suite? With that extra space to make your stay even more comfortable and luxurious, you will really feel like you have your very own home away from home.

Entertainment & recreation

Now whether you want to just chill out by the pool, take in a movie, watch a show or sip on a cocktail as you watch the sunset, there is the option for you on Black Watch. How would you like an afternoon tea in the Observatory Lounge? Or perhaps you’d prefer a glass of wine or a pint as you soak up the rays at The Marquee Bar, Black Watch’s alfresco bar. Of course, there are all the deck games to enjoy along with board games, card games and even some gaming tables if you fancy trying your luck.

If you prefer to sit back and be entertained, why not head along to the Marina Theatre which is Black Watch’s onboard cinema, here you find the latest in 3D technology plus some very comfy seating. Or, if you prefer your entertainment live, head along to the Neptune Lounge, where you can sit sipping your glass of wine as you relax to the feast of music, dance and comedy entertainment.

Lasting impressions

Holding just 804 guests, Black Watch is the perfect place to unwind in intimate, charming surroundings. With the super friendly and accommodating staff and the welcoming and warm atmosphere wherever you go on the ship, it’s no wonder that Fred Olsen’s Black Watch see's such high repeat passenger numbers. From the moment you walk on board you will feel right at home and be able to enjoy your cruise in true comfort, so you can just sit back and soak in everything the ship has to offer!

Disney Cruise Line provides the perfect family holiday, full of magic, wonder and fun. Your time onboard a Disney cruise will leave you bursting with excitement whether a child or adult, because of the daily fun-packed schudules for children and luxurious relaxation for adults.

Disney Wonder was made more magical for all of the family, as she underwent dry dock enhancements in Autumn 2016 in Cadiz, Spain. With promises of an exclusive restaurant, a stage adaption of everyone's favourite musical Frozen and the excitement of the Marvel Super Hero Academy, Disney Cruise Line have not held back when it comes to enhancing their already fabulous cruising experience.

Tiana's Place Restaurant

Tiana's Place is a brand new restaurant exclusive to Disney Wonder. The reason this is the best place to eat for all the family is the vibrant atmosphere, live entertainment and delicious New Orleans inspired dining. Inspired by "The Princess and the Frog", Tiana's Place is inspired by the southern charms of America, serving up tasty gumbo and jazz music. Watching the live bands in the restaurant, means that the little ones won't get bored over dinner time, making it a much more pleasant dining experience for all the family.

Marvel Super Hero Academy

One of the most exciting updates is the introduction of the Marvel Super Hero Acamady to Disney's Oceaneer Club giving the children the chance to be part of a big adventure with Marvel's greatest Super Heroes. This isn't only fun for the children but also teaches them the value of teamwork, bravery and problem solving with the help of their favourite Super Heroes, as Spider-Man and Captain America make appearances and many more on a large digital display.

After Hours Nighttime District

The enhancements on Disney Wonder don't just take into account what the children want onboard, but also are making the cruising experience much more enjoyable for adults. The adult district is getting a new English tavern-style pub. With dark woods, leather furniture and brass accents, complimented by a selection of cocktails, British and speciality beers and brews, this will be the perfect venue for adults to unwind and have some fun in the evening.

However the adult enhancements don't end here, you can also expect an all-new night club and a reimagined model of the popular Cadillac Lounge.

Frozen, A Musical Spectacular

If you haven't seen Frozen, then there is a high chance that you have been living under a rock. The story of the royal sisters Anna and Elsa will be brought to life onboard Disney Wonder in November. The beloved animated hit will be an exclusive stage show for Disney Wonder and will combine traditional theatre techniques, modern technologies and the classic Disney style. Be awe-struck as you watch the beautiful production, and revel in the fact that your children are having the time of their life, singing along to some of their favourite hits with their favourite characters.

Senses Spa & Salon

Spas and salons provide the perfect relaxation for anyone onboard a cruise ship. Disney Wonder will be enhancing their spa by expanding and modernizing it. And to make this perfect for all of the family, there will also be the introduction of the Chill Teen Spa, perfect for helping the teens onboard to feel just as relaxed with treatments designed specifically for them.

Grand Princess — The Drydock Story, Part 3

clock 13th May 2011 | comment0 Comments

With the clock ticking and passengers due to embark on the new Grand Princess in a matter of days we pick up the action with Martyn as the crew madly put the finishing touches into place.

With the Piazza taking shape the old Atrium has almost been forgotten about and the new hub of the ship is coming together at an incredible pace. With new bars, restaurants, cafes and shopping all calling the Piazza home in a matter of days. From here on in the way the ship transforms in just four days is incredible impressive.

Tick, Tick, Tick

There are fours days until the first passengers arrive onboard the ship and Martyn meets up with Casey Scholtz, the Piazza's project manager to see how things are going. Alfredo's pizza oven is in place and the flooring and tile work throughout the International Cafe, Vines and Alfredo's is taking shape.

All Hands On Deck

Martyn is back in the Piazza as the finishing touches to Crooners are put into place and Leaves Tea Room kicks into gear. The gym has had a face lift with new equipment fit throughout and up on deck the teak decking is being replaced and the area where Skywalker's once stood is taking shape.

Finishing Touches

With one day until passengers arrive the Grand Princess is taking shape at an incredible rate. The Casino is finished and the completely rebuild spa has their first customer as Martyn gets a trim while admiring the new facilities.

The New Grand Princess

To sign off from this great video dairy Martyn heads to the International Cafe for coffee and cake before taking us to Alfredo's, where Princess Cruises executive chef prepares the first pizzas. He pops into Vines Wine Bar for a chat with the maitre d' and sommelier and to sample the new menu, followed by a trip to leaves to show off the 250 tea variations on offer.

In less then four weeks Princess Cruises have taken one of their most popular ships and given her some serious TLC. The former flagship, and one time most expensive ship at sea, can take pride among the best ships to sail from Southampton this year, and I can't wait to go and see her in person. The question will be whether to enjoy the new rear sun deck, one of the updated lounge bars or whether to indulge in the great new dining venues, such as the New York themed Crown Grill.

The New Grand Princess has undergone an incredible impressive revitalization in an even more impressive amount of time. Well done Princess and well done to all the crew involved.

What our customers say

"I booked a Fred Olsen cruise with IGLU last month and was so impressed by the service I received. The staff member I spoke to was Kimberley and she was exemplary. Capable, kind, professional, patient, friendly and knowledgeable. She went through every step of the way calmly and thoroughly. IGLU were recommended to me by friends and I have no hesitation in passing the recommendation along. Well done IGLU and thank you. "

"So easy to deal with, I studied the Cruise I wanted, did my research with different company's and returned to Iglu. I had three quotes matching Iglu’s cost, but with one phone call they beat the price themselves by £40 without me even asking, how easy was that! "
