The Port of Marseille is the cradle not only in terms of location but in bringing trade, culture and wealth to Marseilles. Nowadays you’ll find the famous fish market a scenic waterfront ideal for sipping pastis while watching the world go by.

Renamed in honour of US President John F. Kennedy after his assassination in 1963, this pretty boulevard boasts architecture from many different eras, and is the perfect place to go for a stroll and admire the pretty beaches and coastline of Marseille.

Founded by the Phoenicians before being all but destroyed in 1706 by Louis XIV, this once mighty fortress dominates the bay with fantastic views out over the city and coast. Nowadays you’ll find a pleasant stroll in the gardens and a gorgeous waterfall.

Full of artisan shops and charming streets, Nice’s old town district is the perfect place to sample some Socca - a local salad Niçoise speciality made with chickpeas. A wander around the flower market is a must too, with intoxicating smells and dazzling colours.

Named after Belorussian artist Marc Chagall, this art museum boasts his 17 “Biblical Message” paintings, and most of the other works follow this religious theme too. Make sure to follow the audio guide to truly immerse yourself in his works and their tales.

Located in a beautiful 17th-century Genoese villa, the Matisse Museum is a must for all art fans. The highlights are the paintings of Henri Mattisse himself, with which you can follow his life through his works, as well as temporary exhibitions.

Situated in Nice’s old town, La Sainte-Réparate Cathedral was built in the 17th century in a predominantly Baroque style. The ceilings and walls are decorated with gold, marble and a myriad of colourful hues throughout as well as carvings and artworks.

Named after the English holiday makers for whom the French Riviera became a popular destination in the 19th century, this gorgeous seafront boulevard is lined with pretty palm trees and luxury hotels, and is now the place for a pleasant seaside stroll.

Locally referred to as Piazza dei Miracoli, the Square of Miracles is home to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, which was first built in 1064, the Baptistery, the Campo Santo – a graveyard – and the Campanile – the cathedral’s bell tower which is perhaps better known as the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Today the square has become a popular place to relax and enjoy the warm sun in some beautiful, historic surroundings.

Maria Assunta. Construction of the building began in 1173, and in spite of a detailed, thought-out design it is believed that a slight lean was evident from the building of the second floor. Building was intermittent due to wars and sociological events, and the tower was not completed until roughly the year 1370. Since this time the lean has been stabilised, and tourists are permitted to enter and climb the staircase to the top for a wonderful view.

The cathedral – or Duomo – and baptistery are two important historic sites which are often overlooked in favour of the Leaning Tower. The cathedral itself dates back to 1064, and you can see within there are influences from the Arabic world, with column designs being reminiscent of those often seen in mosques. The neighbouring baptistery is the largest in the country, and was originally designed in 1152, before being remodelled in the mid-13th century.

The Taurine Baths - a Roman archaeological site dating back to the 1st century BC - are located around 4km from the urban centre of Civitavecchia. There is a legend that says the baths came to be after a bull scraped at the ground before a fight, and in doing so uncovered a hot water spring.

Aquafelix Waterpark is ideal for a day of fun with your family and friends. It is the largest water park in central Italy, and boasts areas dedicated to both adults and children.

The construction of the Michelangelo Fort began in 1508 and ended in 1537. The structure of the fortress, in true Renaissance style, has the shape of a quadrilateral with a tower in each corner, and the central tower has an octagonal layout. Its creation was ordered by Pope Julius II, to defend the Port of Civitavecchia against pirates and any other hostile encounters.

The Cathedral of San Francesco d'Assisi is the most important church of Civitavecchia. Dating back to the 17th century and completely restored in 1950, it has a Baroque style and stands on the remains of a previous Franciscan church.

The Cathedral of Sorrento, located on the Bishop's Plaza (or piazza del vescovado in Italian), was built on the remains of an ancient Greek temple. Construction began in the 10th century and the church was consecrated in 1113. The neo-Gothic facade dates back to the 20th century.

Marina Grande is the ancient fishing village of Sorrento. It’s been used as a film set for several Italian films in the 1950s, and is now a tourist resort that offers incredible views of the Gulf of Naples, Mount Vesuvius, and the Capo di Sorrento coast.

Piazza Tasso is the main square of Sorrento. It is named after Torquato Tasso, a 16th-century Italian poet who penned the well-known epic poem, 'Jerusalem Delivered", to which a statue is dedicated. Another statue, located in the centre of the square, depicts Antonino da Campagna - the patron saint of the city.

Positano is one of the most fascinating and attractive stretches of the Sorrento peninsula - and indeed the entire Amalfi coast. It is located between Capo Sottile and Punta Germano. One stand out attraction here is the luxurious Roman Villa from the 1st century BC. This is believed to have been built for a freed slave called Posides Claudi Caesari, and can be visited by tourists today.

The construction of the Cathedral of Sant'Andrea, also known as the Cathedral of Amalfi, began in the year 987 at the behest of Duke Mansone I. It is said that St. Francis of Assisi went there in 1218 to honour the relics of St. Andrew the Apostle, which are kept here.

The Amalfi Coast was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997, due to its incredible natural beauty. It overlooks the Gulf of Salerno and includes the stretch from Positano to Vietri sul Mare, totalling around 50 km.

The Cloister del Paradiso is part of the Cathedral of Amalfi. It was built between 1266 and 1268 as a cemetery for high-standing citizens. The structure, in Moorish style, has an internal garden - probably dating back to the 20th century - and 120 columns.

The Emerald Grotto was discovered in 1932. It is a gorgeous, natural location in which shimmering water sits calmly in an intricate cave. The grotto owes its name to the shades that the water takes on due to the sunlight that filters through from above. It is directly connected to the Tyrrhenian Sea, and can be accessed by sea or by land.

The former paper mill of Amalfi was transformed into today's Museo della Carta in 1969, thanks to Nicola Milano, its owner. You can admire the machinery and equipment, still working, used in the past to make paper by hand.

Villa Rufolo is located in the town of Ravello, about 7 km from Amalfi. The property dates back to the 13th century and underwent a substantial restoration in the 19th century. Today, visitors to the villa will see the Arab-Norman style architecture, and can admire the beautiful gardens. The lower garden hosts the Ravello festival every year.

If you are looking for a secluded beach tucked away in serenity by beautiful rock coves, head to Jaz Beach where you’ll be able to sunbathe and relax.

After being restored numerous times following earthquakes, St Tryphon’s Cathedral continues to represent the expertise of Roman architecture. With many stunning artefacts and decorations, this cathedral is well worth exploring.

A short drive from Kotor, Lovćen National Park is home to imposing mountains including the spectacular Mount Lovćen standing 1,749 metres high. With no shortage of outdoor adventures to discover, visitors will love quad biking and zip lining in particular.

With countless boutiques, authentic eateries, and bars as well as a quaint museum teeming with ancient artefacts, Old Town Budva is a delightful place to explore. Enjoy dessert from a charming bakery, admire the view from the citadel and bask in the peace and quiet.

After climbing 1,350 stairs to a height of 1,200 metres you’ll find this impressive fortress built between the 9th and 19th centuries. With Byzantine and Venetian roots, this structure is beautifully preserved and teeming with fascinating history to discover.

Nestled in lush surroundings with views over the town nearby, Aquapark Budva is perfect for spending a hot afternoon cooling off. The park features multiple pools and waterslides to suit a range of ages, as well as a restaurant, bars, shops and lockers.

Croatia’s first water park boasts plenty of slides, waterfalls and sprinklers to keep families entertained all day, as well as a 200-metre lazy river and numerous jacuzzis. Recharge on a sun lounger or grab a bite to eat and a cold drink at the Splash Bar.

Primarily a refuge and rehabilitation centre for birds of prey, Dubrava Falconry Centre aims to educate and enchant visitors with up-close experiences. Visitors can watch demonstrations and take tours of the centre to learn more about the many species found in Croatia.

Teeming with lakes and waterfalls, as well as a monastery constructed by visiting monks, Krka National Park has everything for an adventurous day out. Visitors can swim, hike and even take a boat ride, admiring the many species of plants, birds and bats.

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, Šibenik’s Cathedral of St James is an especially popular stop for fans of the Game of Thrones series. Built entirely from stone, this is an impressive structure to visit with 71 life-sized sculpted heads on the exterior.

St Michael’s Fortress is one of the first things visitors will see upon arriving at Šibenik. Throughout history the structure has been torn down and rebuilt numerous times, though it is now an iconic landmark of the city.

Built between 1533 and 1546, Šibenik Town Hall is a beloved landmark in Croatia, restored in 1943 after an attack from ally air forces. Now it is a home to a restaurant as well as a place to hold events and conferences.

For a quaint, peaceful escape from the city, Hrastovlje Village is home to scenic views of rolling hills, vineyards and traditional Istrian architecture. Here, you’ll find the 13th-century Church of the Holy Trinity, as well as art galleries, hiking and cycling.

This pebble beach is located just a short distance from the cruise terminal, making it an easy place to visit and soak up the sun. With plenty of lounging chairs available as well as a restaurant, café and showers, Koper City Beach has everything you need for a relaxed day out.

As one of the most integral structures in Koper, the Praetorian Palace is an impressive landmark that will take visitors on a journey of the town’s history. Built in the 15th century, it represents a Venetian Gothic style and serves as a Tourist Information Centre from where you can take tours.
