Situated at the foot of Table Mountain, the incredible Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is a must visit whilst in Cape Town. Claimed to be one of the world’s most scenic botanical gardens, it places importance on preserving the indigenous plants of South Africa. Within the gardens, you’ll find a conservatory, amongst other extraordinary sights.

Alternatively, you could head to the Two Oceans Aquarium. Home to 8,000 marine animals, it’s located on the scenic V&A Waterfront. Popular with families, whilst at the aquarium, you’ll see the likes of great white sharks, clownfish, rays and more.

Getting its name from the granite boulders that surround it, Boulders Beach is located on the Cape Peninsula in South Africa. Not only is this beach incredibly scenic, but it’s a popular place to visit due to the thriving colony of African penguins that call the beach their home.

Found in New Brighton shack settlement, a township just north of central Port Elizabeth, this museum is dedicated to the South African peoples’ struggle against Apartheid; within, you’ll find an auditorium, art gallery, memorial space, and more. If you want to learn more about this important event, this is one of the best places to do it.

One of the largest national parks in South Africa, Addo Elephant National Park is a diverse conservation park and nature reserve just north of Port Elizabeth. While known for its elephant colony, which is over 600 elephants strong, you’ll also find a variety of South African wildlife species here – from lions and leopards to hyenas and zebras. It’s also home to several-hundred Cape buffalos, endangered black rhinos, and a wide variety of flora.

With magnificent humpback whales visiting the waters around Port Elizabeth from June to August and November to January, southern right whales visiting between July and November, and Bryde’s whales being spotted year-round, this destination is among the best spots in the world for whale watching.

A short drive from Le Port, Saint-Denis is the capital of Reunion famed for its Creole-style manor houses and architecture reflecting the island’s colonial past. Here, you’ll find an abundance of shopping opportunities, a variety of restaurants perfect for indulging in the local cuisines, and museums on French colonialism and modern art; particularly, the Musee Leon Dierx houses pieces from Picasso and Gauguin, among others.

Inland from Le Port, this viewpoint atop the mountain Maido is a fantastic spot to see Reunion from; here, you’ll have the chance to admire the vibrant scenery surrounding you and see this incredible island in a new and unique way. A volcanic peak over 2,000m above sea level, the views from this vantage point are breathtaking.

An impressive volcanic caldera inland from Le Port, the Cirque de Salazie is a stunning area of Reunion and excursions here are full of rewarding experiences. With stunning waterfalls, vanilla plantations, and more to admire as you explore this vibrant landscape, you won’t regret exploring here.

Offering spectacular views out over the ocean, the Citadelle (Fort Adelaide) is the often thought to be the top attraction in the city. Built to protect it from invasion, it dates back to the 19th century and was constructed when Mauritius was under British rule.

A historic museum with a variety of stamp, coin and art exhibits, a trip to the Blue Penny Museum is a wonderful way to spend an hour or two during your stopover in Port Louis.

Situated on the Harbour Waterfront, the Odysseo Oceanarium is home to a variety of animals from sharks to other marine life, and is the largest of its kind in Mauritius.

Opened in 1855 as the primary destination for convicts transported from Britain before being used as a prison for local criminals through 1886 to 1991, Fremantle Prison is a World Heritage Site steeped in complicated histories of Australia’s colonial past and Fremantle’s developing society. Now a museum and landmark which can be toured, a visit here is an eye-opening experience.

The second oldest European structure in Western Australia, this unique building was constructed with the intention of being a prison in 1831. Panopticon-inspired in its design, meaning all prisoners could be observed by one correctional officer, without actually knowing whether they were being watched or not, the Round House housed colonial and indigenous prisoners until 1886, and then became the residence of Fremantle Prison’s chief constable from 1900. It’s now open to the public and hosts numerous events throughout the year, giving visitors another unique insight into the early history of this city.

An important defensive fortification on Rottnest Island, which is just a short ferry from Perth, Oliver Hill Battery is a unique World War II installment worth exploring. Here, alongside sandy dunes and a chance to enjoy the warm weather Western Australia enjoys, you’ll have the chance to explore the tunnels under the fortification, see a restored 9.2-inch artillery gun, and learn more about how an installment like this operated.

Spanning 51 hectares, the botanical gardens in Adelaide are situated in the north east of the city. Opened in 1857, this picturesque park is home to an array of plant life, and is a tranquil place to explore throughout the day.

The second oldest zoo in Australia, Adelaide Zoo is home to over 2,500 animals and 250 species, including birds, fish and a variety of exotic animals. Located close to the city centre, this picturesque zoo is the perfect family activity.

Formerly known as the National Gallery of South Australia, the Art Gallery of South Australia was opened in 1881. Home to over 38,000 different artworks, varying from Australian art to international art, it’s the ultimate attraction for art enthusiasts.

One of the most popular attractions in the city is the Queen Victoria Market. Spanning an impressive seven hectares, this large open air market has a variety of stalls, including clothing and fruit and vegetables.

Situated in the Royal Park, within easy reach of the city centre, Melbourne Zoo is another popular attraction in Melbourne. Home to nearly 4000 animals and 243 different species, it’s a tranquil and fascinating place to visit whilst in the city.

Once a jail, and now a museum, the Old Melbourne Gaol is a captivating historical building in Melbourne. With an eerie feeling, a tour around it is bound to intrigue, as you learn about the fascinating history of the jail and its inhabitants.

An iconic attraction in Sydney, the Sydney Opera House is home to a variety of performances throughout the year and features unique 20th century architecture. Located on Sydney Harbour, this extraordinary building is well worth a visit to, whether you’re looking to watch a performance there or to simply explore it.

A popular attraction in Sydney is the picturesque Royal Botanic Garden. Spanning 30 hectares on Sydney Harbour, it has a wide array of plant life and boasts incredible views of the Sydney Opera House and the city's wide array of skyscrapers. Alternatively, you could reach for the sky at the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Constructed out of steel, this prominent bridge connects the central business district to the North Shore.
