SOUTH AMERICA DISCOVERY - 7 Jan - 19 March, 2016 72 days away. 23 ports, with two missed out because of bad weather - Port of Spain, Trinidad, and Punta del Este, Uruguay. 23,500 miles travelled. Fantastic experience, although for some guests the first week was not a good one because of an unseasonably early storm after departing Madeira. Saga Pearl II is smallish so it got tossed around a bit The quality of staff is excellent, and lots of long service crew which says a lot about Saga employment practices. Staff and management aboard worked hard to ensure that the cruise was a memorable experience for guests - for all the right reasons - and they succeeded. The entertainment was generally of good quality and high standard, something for everyone, really. The highlights for me and the missus were: - the Panama Canal transit (one of the 7 Wonders of the Modern World - meeting up with an ex-colleague in Guayaquil, Ecuador - Lima, Peru - the Chilean fjords, "glacier alley" and the Garibaldi Glacier - a lap of honour around Cape Horn on a calm and sunny morning - Buenos Aires, with a return evening performance by the Morgado Esteban Cuarteto and tango dancing, aboard. The quartet had done 3 performances on the Colombia - Peru leg. - Rio de Janeiro, the trip to Christ the Redeemer (in clear weather), and an evening performance aboard by Samba Rio. (I heard that the ship's doctor was on standby with the defibrillator.....but maybe that was a tongue-in-cheek comment from one of the female passengers because the Samba dancer outfits!) And that's just to name some of the highlights.....there was much, much more. The only downside.......stepping on the scales yesterday. The dining was excellent with really good complimentary wines at lunch and dinner. We did our own excursions as we are fit and able, and confident about doing our own thing. One memorable excursion we organised via the internet was the 'Grafreetti' in Valparaiso, conducted by a street artist. Amazing creative art! I can highly recommend Saga cruises. Of the 23 cruises we've done, this has to be the best cruise ever!

As well as the Roman ruins, the excellently preserved Dover Castle and the Roman Painted House featuring impressive murals, visitors will find numerous seafood restaurants and bars along the waterfront to relax in. Dover Castle
Perhaps the most iconic landmark in the port city of Dover, Dover Castle was built in the 11th century and is Grade I listed. A key defensive castle, it’s operated by English Heritage and offers several events throughout the year, including pirate shows and canon displays.
White Cliffs
For incredible views out towards France, head to the White Cliffs of Dover. Reaching 350 feet, this prominent attraction is popular with tourists and locals alike due to the fantastic walking trails. Within easy reach of the castle and port, its striking appearance makes it a must see when stopping off or cruising from Dover.
Connaught Park
Alternatively, you can head inland to Connaught Park; a spacious park that has lots of trails, a playground, tennis courts and breathtaking views out towards Dover and the channel. On sunny days, cruise ships can be seen docked at the port.
Kiel Canal
DAY 2
With state of the art port facilities, easy access to the city centre and varied attractions to suit cruisers of all ages, Kiel is a hidden gem in the Baltic sea. A good way to get your bearings of this port city is through a hop-on-hop-off bus tour, taking you to the top landmarks in comfort. To discover the history of Kiel, head to the Maritime Museum and the German Submarine U-995. For a laidback wander and good food, visit Kiellinie.

Zoological Museum
Dating to the 17th century, the Zoological Museum in the University of Kiel is home to an array of exhibits, including dinosaur skeletons. Housed in an impressive building, it’s one of the oldest of its kind in Germany, and has evolved into one of the most significant archives with unique scientific and cultural collections.
Botanical Garden
Over 350 years old, the Old Botanical Garden features an array of plant life from tropical trees to flowers. A calming and tranquil attraction to visit whilst in the city, it has greenhouses, a pavilion and other scenic sights throughout it.
Schlossgarten
Within the beautiful Kiel Castle Garden lies a historic Renaissance garden, a sculpture garden and other features. Spanning 300 metres, this quaint garden is the perfect place to relax with a refreshing drink or enjoy a picnic on a nice day, in-between exploring the city.

DBW Park
One of the most upscale parks in the city is DBW Park, which is situated on the shore of the Baltic Sea. Kneippbyn
A short journey from Visby is the Kneippbyn theme park. Full of waterslides, rides and live performances throughout the day, it’s inspired by the iconic Pippi Longstocking films and is a fun day out for all the family.
Lummelunda
The Lummelunda Cave is situated in a nature preserve north of Visby on the Swedish island of Gotland. One of the longest caverns in Sweden, the investigated portion of this karst cave is nearly 4.5 km long.
Stockholm (Nynashamn)

Combining ancient history and architecture with modern urban flair, Stockholm is known as one of the most welcoming cities in the world. Culture vultures, in particular, will be delighted by the range of attractions on offer, such as the fairytale-esque Old Town, the extravagant royal palace and the Vasa Museum. For ultimate relaxation, head to a Swedish sauna to soak in an ambient setting. Just don't forget to leave time for authentic Swedish street food!

Royal Palace
One of most impressive palaces in Europe, the Royal Palace of Stockholm holds the majority of the monarchy's formal receptions year-round, as well as being the King of Sweden's official home. The palace, designed to resemble a Roman palace, was constructed in the baroque style by architect Nicodemus Tessin. With a state apartment overlooking the city and smaller living rooms facing the inner courtyard, the palace includes more than 600 rooms spread across eleven storeys.

DAY 5
Boasting the sophisticated style and charm of a Scandinavian city, Helsinki is home to unique architecture, countless open parks, lavish shopping opportunities and some of the best seafood in the world. Grab a cup of rich Finnish coffee from the popular Market Square, pick up some handcrafted souvenirs and start exploring. We recommend the Chapel of Silence, Helsinki City Museum, the Design District and Helsinki University's Botanical Gardens.

Helsinki Cathedral
The Helsinki Cathedral is a Finnish Evangelical Lutheran cathedral of the Diocese of Helsinki and is situated in Senate Square in the neighbourhood of Kruununhaka. The church was initially constructed between 1830 and 1852 as a memorial to Tsar Nicholas I of Russia, the Grand Duke of Finland.
Museum of Finland
In the National Museum of Finland you’ll find an array of artefacts dating all the way back to the Stone Age. Objects which showcase Finland’s fascinating cultural history, it’s housed within an impressive building designed in a romantic, Finnish national style.
Art Museum
The Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma is located within Mannerheimintie in Helsinki. A quirky, modern building, it forms part of the Finnish National Gallery and houses contemporary art from an array of different international artists.
St. Petersburg - Overnight onboard

St Petersburg is all about extravagant and colourful architecture, renowned artwork and delectable dining. A full day tour is the best way to see as much of this imperial city as possible, with guides often beginning the experience with a visit to the Rostral Columns. With over a thousand years of history, Tallinn has struck a fantastic balance between old and new attractions, making it an ideal port of call. To get stuck into Estonian history and culture, visit the Estonian Architecture Museum and Tallinn's Old Town, both boasting fascinating insights into the city. Head to the TV Tower for unrivalled views across the Baltic, and for relaxing in the sun, Pirita Promenade will take you to the sandy beach for sunbathing and swimming.

Art Museum
Situated within a 18th-century Baroque palace, the Kadriorg Art Museum showcases international art dating between the 16th and 20th century. Built in 1725, the art museum was designed by Mikhail Zemtsov and Gaetano Chiaveri.

Taillin’s largest orthodox church, the Aleksander Nevski Katedraal is situated in the heart of the city. Built by Mikhail Preobrazhensky in an extraordinary and colourful Russian style, it dates to the late 19th century and is still an active church on Toompea hill.

Way out in the Baltic sea, just 200km from Copenhagen, is the sunniest island in Denmark. Bornholm boasts an abundance of lush forests, rugged rock faces and dramatic coastlines that are just waiting to be explored whether you're on foot, biking or kayaking. Berlin (Warnemunde)

Since Warnemunde is just a 2 hour train journey from Berlin, many cruisers choose to head to the city, overlooking many hidden gems. This charming port town is a popular summer getaway for locals and it's easy to see why - with a seaside promenade, quirky storefronts, classic beer gardens and unique architecture, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll in the sun, followed by a splash in the sea or sunbathing on the beach.

Lighthouse
One of the most significant landmarks in Warnemunde is the lighthouse. Overlooking the Warnow River, the lighthouse was built in 1898 and has an impressive height of 36.9. A must visit whilst in the area, when you reach the top of it you’ll be awarded with breathtaking panoramic views.
Heimatmuseum
Housed in a picturesque building that dates to the 18th century, the museum is beautifully furnished with an array of collections showcasing the seafaring past, along with other artefacts from the local area. A fascinating insight into Warnermunde’s past, this quaint museum is situated in the centre of the port town.
Local Beach
One of the main beaches in the coastal resort, the Strand Warnemunde is distinguished by a white sandy beach and spans 200 metres. Warnemünde Beach is a well-liked gathering location due to the abundance of sports facilities available to enjoy on the beach.
