Carnival Corporation has forecasted that the UK cruise industry will grow significantly over the next decade as more people are attracted into taking a holiday at sea.
The company, which is Britain's biggest cruise operator, said the UK cruise industry will double in size over the next ten years with around three million annual holidays.
Micky Arison, chief executive of Carnival Corporation, made the prediction in a foreword contained in the Cruise Report 2010 from
Carnival Cruises UK, which is owned by the firm.
Focusing ten years into the future, he said: "I can see no reason why it [the UK cruise market] should not double in size to match the kind of growth the market has experienced in North America."
The forecast represents a 100 per cent growth to the current level of 1.5 million UK cruise holidays every year.
An estimated 1.65 million British cruise holidays are expected to take place in 2010, according to predictions from the Passenger Shipping Association.
