Royal Caribbean Cruises has been given the green light to operate cruises from Shanghai to Taiwan.

Dr Liu Zinan, managing director of the cruise line, said the move was in reponse to strong demand from international markets.

"Royal Caribbean Cruise Line is a very pleased with this chance to contribute to the peace and exchange between the people of both straits," he commented.

The sailings will be undertaken by the Legend of the Seas and is to consist of planned itineraries lasting between six and seven days.

Ports of call will consist of Hualien in Taiwan, Keelung and Taichung.

Legend of the Seas will also operate a five-night cruise from Shanghai to Fukuoka and Busan in April.

In November this year, the cruise line will return to Asia for a series of sailings from Shanghai to Korea and Japan.
