Royal farewell to QE2

Date Posted: 09 Jun 2008
Category:
Her Majesty the Queen bid an emotional farewell to long-serving cruise ship Queen Elizabeth 2 in Southampton on Friday June 6th.

Previously, the Queen has boarded the QE2 prior to her maiden voyage on May 1st 1969 and the 150th anniversary of Cunard Cruises
on July 27th 1990.

The royal visit included a tour of the ship and a reception and lunch with 300 guests, including former prime minister Baroness Thatcher.

"We are delighted and honoured that Her Majesty the Queen has chosen to visit QE2 to wish her farewell. I am certain this final visit will be a memorable occasion for all involved," president of Cunard Cruises Carol Marlow commented.

Queen Elizabeth 2 leaves the service of Cunard Line in November 2008 when the ship will become a floating hotel in Dubai.

The ship will be succeeded by a new 92,000-ton liner, Queen Elizabeth, which is scheduled to enter into service in 2010.
