Ketchikan says 'stay longer'

Date Posted: 21 Jul 2008
Officials from the Alaskan port of Ketchikan are calling on cruise lines to stay in the city longer and allow passengers more time to explore the area.

According to the Anchorage Daily News, some cruise lines only stop in Ketchikan for a matter of hours and city officials are said to be keen for passengers to stay longer.

Some of Ketchikan's main attractions include the Southeast Alaska Discovery Centre, Tongass National Forest and the Deer Mountain Tribal Hatchery.

Ships visiting Ketchikan during the tourist season currently dock for around 3,700 hours, with vessells spending more time at the ports of Skagway and Juneau.

Ketchikan is also home to the famous Misty Fiords National Monument, one of Alaska's most breathtaking natural formations.

Cruise lines currently offering trips to Alaska include Royal Caribbean Cruises and Princess Cruises.
