Over the last three months Costa Cruises
has invested more than 22 million euros in fleet maintenance.
Each of Costa's 12 ships undergoes maintenance every two years and this year it was the turn of the Costa Serena, Costa Europa, Costa Atlantica, Costa Romantica and Costa Concordia.
The Costa Serena was dry-docked earlier this month at the Fincantieri Palermo shipyard, where improvements were made to its fuel and energy systems.
Work was also carried out on the ship's air conditioning system in public areas.
"The other operation involved the application of a special ecological silicone-based coating that inhibits the growth of micro-organisms on the hull's surface without releasing toxic substances into the sea," Costa said.
Maintenance work also involved a makeover of the hotel section, with curtains, carpets and other upholstery items replaced.
Other ships in Costa's fleet include the Fortuna, Romantica and Classica.
