One of Sicily's most awe-inspiring cathedrals has reopened, a new report indicates.
In news of interest to anyone planning a villa holiday in Sicily
, the St Nicholas Cathedral in the city of Noto is now accessible following an 8-year restoration programme, according to the Associated Press (AP).
After being damaged by an earthquake 11 years ago, the baroque structure was closed.
Reportedly, some 83,000 workers contributed to the landmark's restoration.
AP heard Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re comment: "It was rebuilt exactly as it was before, using the same hand cut stone and a large part of the original material."
The popularity of villa holidays in Sicily
is due in part to the way in which the destination's striking architecture integrates so easily with its beautiful natural landscape.
Cultural landmarks in the region are having a lucky few months - in May, La Repubblica reported that a statue of Venus could be returned to Italy from Los Angeles' J Paul Getty Museum.
