While there may only be one restaurant on the ship, guests can expect food of an exceptional standard from morning to evening. Breakfast and lunch are served as a buffet, while dinner has two seating times and a set menu, although there are still extensive buffet options available. Hurtigruten prides itself in sourcing local ingredients, so many dishes are made from products picked up at the destinations you visit. Enjoy everything from classic dishes to sheep’s head, although vegetarians and vegans are also well catered for.
Meanwhile, for snacks, sandwiches and drinks throughout the day, guests can head to the Brugga Bistro.
Evenings on MS Spitsbergen are spent relaxing with other guests in the Explorer Lounge and Bar. The combination of delicious drinks and stunning views from the huge windows make this a popular spot for gathering at night time.

Announcements are made if any wildlife has been spotted, such as whales and puffins, and the ship will slow down so that nobody misses these incredible sights. There are also fascinating lectures which give guests the opportunity to learn more about the history of the Norwegian coastline.
In addition, guests will find a small gym, sauna and two hot tubs available for their enjoyment.
When you opt for a MS Spitsbergen voyage, you can access a range of amenities, activities and more that are included as standard in your base fare. Sadly let down by Hurtigruten. The ship was very comfortable, the food excellent and the scenery fantastic. However, the reason you go on this cruise is to see the Northern Lights. The literature clearly states again and again that announcements will be made whenever the lights are visible so that "you will never miss a sighting". Sadly that did not happen on our cruise. Three announcements were indeed made but we were told by other passengers that there had been at least two other occasions, later in the evenings, when the lights were visible and better. We had our loudspeaker on in our cabin, our clothes and cameras ready, but we missed it! I have tried to get an explanation from Hurtigruten but they do not respond to my emails. I can only conclude that once their guarantee is fulfilled they are no longer interested in their passengers. Very difficult to rate this cruise as the ship should get 6 but their service over the lights gets 0. Average out at 3
