Is smoking allowed on cruise ships?

Smoking isn't allowed at all within staterooms, including balconies.

There is only a single lounge on the ship where smoking is allowed in a designated area. The same applies to the casino, where there is a small section close to the slot machines where smoking is permitted.

There are often smoking areas near sections of the outside bars and also on designated sections on the port side of the pool decks. Outdoor smoking is restricted to designated areas.

MSC Cruises

Whilst smoking is not permitted in cabins (including balconies), there are areas located indoors where smoking is permitted.

At least one lounge and the casino will be available for smokers.

Each ship has a dedicated cigar lounge.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line

Smoking is permitted in the casino and in the cigar bar (if available) as well as the cabins and balconies. Smoking isn't allowed in any other indoor area.

Smoking is also permitted on designated areas of the open deck.

P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises

Smoking is not permitted in any part of the ship's interior.

There are areas on the open air decks where you will be permitted to smoke. Additionally, you may smoke upon your private balcony (Until 2014 - see below).

From 2014, please note that smoking will not be permitted on your stateroom balcony. Electronic cigarettes can be used, but only if they do not emit vapour.  

Princess Cruises

Smoking is not allowed in cabins or on stateroom balconies. Dedicated smoking areas will be provided on outside decks.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean

Whilst smoking isn't allowed in staterooms, it is permitted in specific smoking areas onboard. Look out for the designated smoking areas in lounges and bars and in some areas of the starboard side of outer decks.

Passengers caught smoking inside their cabin will be charged a $250 penalty.
 

From 2014 guests will no longer be able to smoke on stateroom balconies.

Smoking is not permitted in any part of the ship's interior.

There are designated smoking areas on the open decks.

Cruise and Maritime

Cruise and Maritime

Designated smoking/non-smoking areas operate throughout the ship. Smoking is not permitted in cabins.

Azamara Cruises

Azamara Cruises

Both ships have one designated smoking area located on the starboard forward section of the pool deck. 

All cabins, balconies and other areas of the ship are non-smoking.
 

Costa Cruises

In addition to your cabin and balcony, smoking is permitted in many of the bars and lounges.

There are designated areas to smoke on the open decks and in the casino.

As per all other cruises, smoking is not allowed in the restaurant or the theatre.

Cunard

Whilst smoking is not allowed in cabin you can smoke on your balcony (Until 2014 - see below). Cunard go to great lengths to sanitise cabins ready for the next occupants. 

Smoking is also permitted on the starboard side of the ships' decks.

Cigar and pipe smokers are welcome in the Churchill's Cigar Lounge only

From 2014, smoking will not be permitted on Stateroom balconies. Electronic cigarettes can be used, but only if they do not emit vapour.

Smoking is not permitted in any part of the ship's interior.

From 15 November 2013, smoking will no longer be allowed on private Verandas, though there remain areas on open deck that will be designated for smokers.

There are areas on the open air decks where you will be permitted to smoke.

Seabourn

Applicable to all ships: Smoking is not allowed in any of the Guest Suites. Please note Electronic Cigarettes may only be smoked in designated smoking areas. The smoking of glass pipes, water pipes or any other such devices is not pernitted onboard.

On Seabourn Pride, Legend and Spirit: Smoking will not be permitted on guest balconies (in category B2 and B3). Smoking will be allowed on private verandas of categories OW and CS suites.

With the exception of during lunch and dinner service, you will be permitted to smoke cigarettes, cigars or pipes outside on the starboard side of the Sky Bar.


On Seabourn Quest, Odyssey and Sojourn: You will be welcome to smoke cigarettes indoors after 8pm in the port side of the Observation Bar (deck 10).

Outside, you will be permitted to smoke
- on the verandas of guest suites
- on the starboard side of the Sky Bar
- Aft of the The Club (Deck 5) on the starboard side of the open terrace

Please note: cigar and pipe smoking will only be permitted on the open terrace aft of Seabourn Square (Deck 7).


The above policies will be implimented from various dates in early 2014. Just ask if you require any further information.

 As of 9 October 2014, smoking will be limited to designated open deck areas, the nightclub and parts of the casino including the casino bar. 

Smoking in staterooms and suites, including on balconies, will be prohibited.
