Summary: I have read some very poor reviews about this ship and an earlier cruise to the baltic capitals, after I had booked, so I was a bit worried about what I would find. I can only say that I and my friends had a wonderful time and would willingly do it all over again. The cruise was well organised from the start. Booking via Iglu went like clockwork, all the paperwork was clear and on time and on the odd occasion i had an enquiry the staff were courteous and knowledgable.

the embarkation procedure has been critisized from some ports, we travelled from Hull and the embarkation procedure was speedy and faultless our bags turning up at our cabin before we did. The cabin was clean and fresh and kept that way throughout the cruise by our cabin steward who was polite friendly and cheerful the whole trip. This attitude was found from all the staff who were a pleasure to deal with at all times. the food was good in both the restaurant and the buffet.

it was well cooked and plentiful with good choices. i would call it good restaurant food though and not fine dining. wine was expensive but the extensive bar menu was reasonably priced. i did not expect to get much out of the entertainment as i don't dance and am not a lover of shows and cabaret, however I was very plesantly surprised as how good they were.

The singing and dancing was relly excellent, the entertainment staff were full of energy and always seemed to be enjoying themselves. There were talks (these were a let down as the subjects were deeply uninspiring) films in the cinema and on cabin TV, classical music, balroom dancing and some craft classes. The real highlights were of course the port visits. These were again perfectly organised, no waiting about, buses and guides exactly on time.

the only let down was that the excursion to berlin had to be cancelled as the ship was late due to problems with the lock gates at the Kiel canal. Tours and tour times were quickly re aranged and I was quite happy with my alternative choice. I won't say much about the excursions except that they really were wonderful. The guides were all very good and the buses clean and air conitioned (for which everyone was extrememly grateful as the weather was blazing hot) and we learned a lot about the rivalry between Sweden and Denmark! can't praise the tours enough.

The cruise is definately aimed at the older traveller, if you're young and lively or have kids it is not for you. The ship is kept spotless, i saw staff cleaning the bannisters, the lifts and sometimes it was hard to get into the ladies as there always seemed to be someone cleaning it! I am aware there were issues regarding sickness on the earlier cruise but the management and staff have responded to it very acively and there are habd sanitizers throughout the ship and on leaving and boarding at each port. there was also someone to give you your knives and forks in the buffet and a squirt of sanitiser at the same time. I also have to mention the Yacht Club restaurant which you can book twice during your cruise.

This is a step up from the Seven Seas, less busyand different food. It's lovely and definately recomended. The only small downside is that the ship is quite old and in places well worn and a few more sun loungers would have been nice (too many selfish passengers would stake out a lounger and leave it unattended for most of the day) but all in all a great cruise, well run, happy and thouroughly recommended

Summary: On boarding the Discovery it became apparent that most of the passengers sailing to the Norwegian Fjords were no first timers to the ship and crew. The Bridge Club has many loyal members that enjoy the combination of a great cruise itinerary and some serious bridge games on sea days. The Yacht Club Restaurant is a must for dinner , you need to pre-book as it fills up really quickly. This restaurant located above the bridge offers sumptuous food and the best sommeliers and attentive waiters I have experienced at sea - this is an optional extra to the dining room.

The guest speakers are one of the best attractions to the Discovery. These experts in the historical, geographical and cultural aspects of the various ports of call offer the most interesting and enriching talks you can wish for. It is worth mentioning that the staterooms are extremely spacious and that the bathrooms are a generous size compared to most cruise lines. Highly recommended for single and couple travellers.
