Today, though very much a busy modern city, it guards a priceless treasure-chest of Spanish colonial art and architecture. Some itineraries allow time to travel deeper into this mysterious El Dorado, to visit the Incas' ancient capital at Cuzco, high in the Andean foothills.
The several islands on Callao, San Lorenzo, El Frontón, the Cavinzas, and the Palominos, are great places to visit, where a large number of sea lions and sea birds live in virtually untouched ecosystems.
