Single Cabin Cruising

clock 16th May 2012 | comment1 Comments

Whether you're cruising to the Caribbean or skiing in Europe not everyone can, or wants to, share a room. Single cabins on cruise ships are notoriously difficult to come by, but with cruise lines finally beginning to cater for the single traveller here's a short look at what you can find on offer.

In years gone by cruise lines and hotels appeared to treat customers looking for singles with slight disdain, but not anymore. The realisation that just because you're after a single room doesn't mean you are travelling alone. Many of us will be on holiday with friends or family, but prefer our own space, whether for the extra peace and quiet, or because our travelling companions snore!

Previously single cabins were severely limited and booking a cabin for single occupancy involved paying double, but things are on the change. Cruise lines such as Fred Olsen, P&O Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Lines all offer single cabins, at more reasonable prices.

Finding a Single Cabin

With single cabins more accessible, and more variety on offer, who should you cruise with?

For elegant, relaxed and un-pretentious British-style cruising there is Fred Olsen Cruises, they offer older but intimate ships, great value and a more traditional feel. They are also currently running some fantastic single cabin deals.

Staying with British-style cruising P&O's latest ship, the stunning new Azura, has a selection of single cabins on offer. You can enjoy the fantastic, yet understated service, superb entertainment and fine dining of one of the newest ships to offer cruises from Southampton.

If entertainment, the ultimate in choice, and freestyle cruising is up your street then NCL's new flag ship, the Norwegian Epic, offers 128 Epic Studios aimed at solo travellers. The Studio cabins will also have access to the private Studio Lounge, a great place to meet other single travellers or relax with your friends.

If you prefer more refined cruising, and your budget can stretch that little further, both Cunard and Holland America offer fantastic cruises for solo passengers. On select cruises they offer a variety of hosts from dance to dinner partners for the single traveller looking for some company, though check with your agent before booking.

With more cruise lines offering single cabins, whether as a solo traveller or with friends, it is easier than ever to find the right ship, cruise line and itinerary for the perfect holiday.

If you have enjoyed any of these cruises, cabins or solo passenger benefits send us a message on our twitter page or post a comment below with advice, your tips and experience for other single cruisers.

Iglu's trip to the Cruise Convention

clock 5th July 2010 | comment0 Comments

This week we attended the cruise convention in Southampton to visit some ships and to listen to an update from industry experts in the discussions. The weather was beautiful and it was great to see so many new and diverse ships in port including Azura, Norwegian Epic and Queen Mary 2.

I visited Queen Mary 2 and hadn't realised just how big she is, although she still retains the Cunard timeless elegance. She feels much more like a hotel in a resort with a planetarium and huge deck area for deck games. The Grills staterooms and suites were particularly wonderful and we enjoyed a fabulous lunch.

A big focus in the conference was on the rise of "new" travel agencies in cruise, utilising new channels such as the web. Iglu were one of the agencies mentioned! We've always worked solely online selling ski holidays and we extended our knowledge and expertise when we started selling cruise holidays. Even though the holiday types are completely different, people want the same thing; the best prices, good value deals and a knowledgeable team of experts who know what they are talking about and can find them the ideal holiday. Also it's vital to have a website that's simple to use and where you can actually find what you're looking for. We've spent years perfecting ours and continue to improve it.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn in Southampton, which is perfect for a pre-cruise overnight stay. Opening the curtains and seeing the Queen Mary 2 one day and then Celebrity Eclipse the next was very exciting, and you could easily walk to the ship with your luggage. I filmed the Eclipse arriving and docking at 5 o'clock in the morning, fantastic navigation from the Captain as he did a 180 degree turn!
